"The wind's on the wold * And the night is a-cold, And the Thames runs chill * Twixt mead and hill, But kind and dear * Is the old house here, And my heart is warm * Midst winter's harm." William Morris for the bed at Kelmscott From the book WILLIAM MORRIS DECOR AND DESIGN |

RUSTIC SPIRIT offers well crafted home decorating ideas in the Arts and Crafts Movement and Adirondack styles for your rustic log cabin, lodge or your Arts and Crafts Period bungalow. All of the Arts and Crafts Movement and rustic log cabin decor items are functional, beautiful and many are handmade. The Arts and Crafts Movement / Arts and Crafts Period were not only popular decorating styles in the late 1800s and early 1900s but also it was a philosophical movement. A reaction to the mass production and frilly Victorian Era home decorating items and architecture the Arts and Crafts Movement promoted simple, hand crafted, well designed and functional art such as handmade embroidered linen, hammered copper, vases and home accessories. Designers and architects such as Gustav Stickley, Dard Hunter of the the Roycrofters, and Frank Lloyd Wright developed their own unique style of the Arts and Crafts Movement. In the Adirondacks in upstate New York during the late 1800s and early 1900s Great Camps for wealthy city people such as the Vanderbuilts and Posts and hotels, cabins and lodges for vacationers enjoying nature were being constructed by designers such as William Durant. In the National Parks throught the country particularly in the West grand lodges were built for vacationers looking to enjoy our Nation's natural wonders. Many of the designers and builders of these structures decorated with the beautifully simple furniture and accessories of the Arts and Crafts Movement and also rustic furnishings made from surrounding natural materials. The colors of the period took on nature's colors of warm muted greens, copper tones, soft golds and tans. |
